Celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day with Maryland Athletics

National Girls & Women in Sports Day is a celebration of progress, possibility, and the powerful women who shape Maryland Athletics every day. From student-athletes and coaches to leaders, staff, and supporters, this moment honors both how far we’ve come and the work still ahead. Maryland is a place where women are empowered to lead, compete, and thrive, and where opportunity is built through belief, investment, and community. Together, we continue to invest in a future where women’s sports can reach even greater heights.
A LETTER FROM DIANA SABAU, SENIOR DEPUTY ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
National Girls & Women in Sports Day is an occasion to truly appreciate the women who make Maryland Athletics what it is every single day, not just through competition, but through leadership, investment, and a belief in what’s possible.

Throughout my career in intercollegiate athletics, I’ve seen the direct impact of how opportunity, interest, and trust can truly change the game for women. When I was considering coming to Maryland, one thing was clear: this is a place where women are encouraged to grow as athletes, leaders, and professionals. That matters to me because it reflects values I care deeply about.

At Maryland, women aren’t asked to wait in line. They’re empowered to lead, compete with confidence, and take ownership of their roles across our programs and departments. Our student-athletes push boundaries every day. Our coaches, administrators, and staff bring passion and purpose to their work. Our fans continue to show what real contribution in women’s sports looks like - by showing up.
This day is about honoring those who paved the way, celebrating those leading right now, and recommitting ourselves to the next generation. Progress doesn’t just happen; it’s built through intentional support, shared responsibility of a higher standard, and a culture that prioritizes women as essential to the future of sport.

To our Terp student-athletes: you are the heart of this day and this department. Your work, resilience, and ambition inspire more people than you may ever realize. To our coaches and staff, thank you for creating spaces where women can grow and lead. And to our fans, your support truly matters. Your presence, your voices, and your belief help move Maryland Athletics forward every day.

I’m proud to be part of a community that continues to invest in women and girls, not just today, but every day. Maryland Athletics and the University of Maryland are stronger because of the women who have led, lead it now, and those who will lead it next.
"Being a woman in sports feels so empowering, especially looking around and seeing what's going on. It feels like I'm part of something important, even if I'm not a big celebrity or a well-known individual. The fact that I'm a part of this movement of more women being a part of sports, and sports channels like ESPN and FOX showing more women's sports is amazing. I want to be part of that. I want to be a part of that push and that attraction to women's sports. I think me going out there and exuding confidence while still being human and fearless in what I want to go after and how I do it is really important."

- Logan Buckmon
Gymnastics Student-Athlete, Junior in Public Health Science
"My experience as a woman working in sports has shaped how I lead, with a focus on the growth, confidence, and well-being of student-athletes and the teams who support them. Throughout my career, I have been proud to help create environments where young women and men feel supported, challenged, and empowered to lead for life beyond sport. Sports have the power to shape lives and serve as a platform for creating opportunities for the next generation."
